The Hardest Part of Being an SLP (And the Alternative I Wish I Created Sooner)
Jun 24, 2026
If you've been in the speech-language pathology world for any length of time, you already know one of the hardest parts of the job: delivering bad news.
Over my 13 years as an SLP, I've had to look countless clients and families in the eye and say the words we all absolutely dread.
"We have a miles-long waitlist."
"Insurance said no."
"We're still waiting on a referral."
"The only opening I have is Tuesday at 9:15 a.m.—take it or leave it."
"I'm sorry."
It's a different kind of burnout.
Not the kind that comes from seeing clients all day. The kind that comes from having the skills, the passion, and the desire to help someone... but constantly running into administrative barriers that keep you from doing exactly that.
For years, I accepted it as "just the way the system works."
Until I started asking myself what happened after those conversations.
Where Do They Go? (The Reality of the Grey Area)
When we tell someone their insurance denied authorization or that our schedule is completely full, they don't magically stop needing support.
They simply get pushed into what I've come to call the Grey Area.
Some become the Waitlist Wanderer, watching their communication skills slowly decline while they wait months for an opening.
Some become the Capped & Cut-Off Client, whose progress loses momentum because insurance decides they've had enough visits.
Others become so exhausted by appointments, paperwork, and the clinical medical model that they quietly disappear altogether....not because they don't care, but because they're tired of feeling like a problem to be solved.
These are people who still want to communicate.
They still want connection.
They still want purpose.
But the system often has nowhere for them to go.
I hit a wall.
I simply couldn't keep saying, "I'm sorry, my hands are tied."
I needed a landing pad.
Imagine a Different Clinical Conversation
Imagine a client calls your clinic.
Or imagine you're sitting across from someone at discharge.
Instead of handing them another dead end, you get to say:
"While we wait for your insurance authorization, we actually offer a community Voice Fit class every Friday from 11:00–12:00. It isn't speech therapy, but it's a wonderful place to stay active, practice using your voice, connect with others, and keep your momentum going while we work through the insurance process."
Imagine how differently that conversation feels.
Instead of ending with disappointment, it ends with an invitation.
Instead of focusing on what someone can't have, you're able to offer something they can do today.
That shift changed everything for me.
An Alternative That Complements, Not Replaces
Voice Fit wasn't designed to replace traditional 1:1 skilled therapy.
It was built to complement it.
It's an ethical, legally compliant, SLP-created group wellness framework that fills the space between therapy and everyday life.
For waitlisted clients, it provides connection, consistency, and meaningful participation instead of months spent waiting in isolation.
For discharged clients, it offers a place to continue using their voice, moving their bodies, building confidence, and connecting with peers who truly understand their journey.
More than anything, it gives people somewhere to belong.
A place where communication isn't measured by standardized tests or insurance visits; but by laughter, conversation, confidence, and showing up week after week.
Implementing this model changed my relationship with my work.
I stopped feeling like the person constantly enforcing insurance limitations and started feeling like the SLP I wanted to be. Looking back now, my only regret is that I didn't build this bridge sooner.
Take the Next Step (Cohort 2 is Open!)
If you've ever ended a conversation wishing you had something more to offer...
If you've ever hated telling someone, "I'm sorry."
If you've ever looked at your waitlist and wished there was another option...
I'd love to show you what we've built.
The Voice Fit Instructor Certification provides the framework, resources, marketing materials, and support to help you create an ethical group wellness program inside your own practice.
Cohort 2 launches July 22nd.
To make sure Voice Fit becomes something you actually implement (not just another course that sits on a shelf), I'm including an exclusive 1:1 strategic coaching session with every Cohort 2 enrollment.
We'll map out how Voice Fit can fit your community, your practice, and your goals.
The best part?
The course is entirely pre-recorded, so you can start learning immediately. Then we'll schedule your coaching session at a time that works for you. You just let me know and we will make it happen.
I don't believe speech therapy is the problem.
I believe we've simply been missing the bridge between therapy and everyday life.
That's the bridge I wish I'd built years ago.
Now I want to help other SLPs build it too.
